Dr. Andreas Obers

Postdoctoral Fellow

Andreas received his B.Sc. in Bioengineering from the Rhine-Waal University and his M.Sc. in Biotechnology from the University of Copenhagen. His early scientific training was shaped by five years in the biotech industry, where he worked on cancer immunotherapy and preclinical development in Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands. He then moved to Australia to pursue a Ph.D. in Immunology and Experimental Medicine between the University of Melbourne and the University of Bonn, mentored by Dr. Laura Mackay and Dr. Christoph Wilhelm. There, he discovered that retinoic acid, a vitamin A metabolite, programs tissue-resident immune cells, revealing pathways to tailor immune responses across multiple organs.

In June 2025, Andreas joined Dr. Shruti Naik’s lab as a postdoctoral fellow, where he explores molecular pathways of cellular–tissue–organismal aging under chronic inflammation, aiming to lay the groundwork for therapies that restore tissue function and extend healthspan.

Beyond science, Andreas is passionate about nature photography, hiking, dancing, and playing ice hockey. He is also deeply interested in ecology and indigenous knowledge systems – perspectives that have shaped his conviction that science thrives through holistic, interdisciplinary thinking.
